APA Explanation Page
  • In text citations are when a writer uses information from a source (Like a book, newspaper, article, website, etc) to explain or give more information in an essay or research paper.  A citation can be a paraphrase, which is using the original author's ideas but not the exact words, or a direct quote, which is using the original author's exact words.  A paraphrase would be like saying : In Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have Speech" he spoke of dreaming that his children would not not be judged just by color, but by the things that are in their character.  A direct quote would be "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." (King, 1963)

  • A reference page citation is a page that shows all the information for each of the original authors for the info you quoted earlier in your paper.  Here are some examples:

Books: McCarthy, B., & B. McCarthy. (1982). Community-based corrections in the United States. Los Angeles: Brooks/Cole Publishing.

Webpage: Bickel, B. (2000). American skin (41 shots): Bruce and Amadou. Retrieved May 22, 2003, from http://crime.about.com/library/weekly/aa061400a.htm

Newspaper: Marbin, C. (1990, October 7). Joe Redner's club closed: Out of work dancers become hot dog venders. St. Petersburg Times. p. A3.

Interview: Chiles, L. Governor of Florida. (1991). Interviewed by Cecil Greek July 4. Tallahassee.

Journal: Anderson, K. (1990). Discretion in police work. American Policing. 34(2), 1-10.

  • Giving the credit to the author is important because it shows where the original information came from and makes it so that you are not stealing someone else's work.
